Fans of Janet Evanovich just might like this series. I know I did. The book under review, Undertaking Irene, is the first in a mystery series written by Pamela Burford. Her struggling sleuth is Jane Delaney, a woman who helps the bereaved meet their obligations to the departed. She’ll place flowers on graves for relatives too busy to do the job themselves. Or she’ll even agree to swipe a cheap broach off a corpse during family visitation — all in the name of fun, of course.
But things do not go well with this last assignment and trouble follows. There’s a handsome priest who isn’t what he seems, and fair weather friends who also help muck things up. Still, Jane manages to plow through several twists and turns to ultimately ferret out the killer.
The ebook was free when I came across it. I don’t know if that is still the case. Either way, Burford has come up with an interesting and funny heroine, and the book is well worth the read.
